Jordyn Wettstein

June 30th, 2009

Story by Michael Harris, photos by Anthony Rao

The doctor looked at Jordyn Wettstein’s x-rays and asked his nurse if they were the correct x-rays or that of another patient. They were indeed Jordyn’s and indeed just weeks after an auto accident, she was ready to get back in the pool.

Jordyn, a 16-year-old rising junior at Tavares High and competitive swimmer, suffered internal injuries and a shattered left leg when her Trail Blazer was hit by another truck and rolled on County Road 561 near Astatula on April 2. Read Full Entry

Former Tavares Star Bound for Houston

June 30th, 2009

Story by Michael Harris

The high temperature in Houston on June 25th, the night of the NBA Draft, was 98 degrees and fell to the steamy low 80s at nightfall. It sounds much like the temperature it was at JJ Fin’s around 11 p.m. on the second floor deck.

While on that muggy deck, the cool and comfortable Jermaine Taylor was all smiles. Houston was his preferred choice – and, in essence, he got his wish.

Russia: A Trip Of A Lifetime

June 19th, 2009

Story by Intern Katie Armstrong

Roosseeah!! The master of ceremonies at the Moscow Circus boomed his country’s name into the microphone with drama, pride and enthusiasm. He rolled the “r,” stretched out the “oo,” hissed the “s,” barely pronounced the “ee,” and with a flamboyant hand gesture, held out the “ah” for several seconds. The crowd applauded with their communal clap, whistling and cheering. That was what Russia was all about – the drama, the dynamics and the pride. Those words describe exactly what Russia embodies. Sutton Bound For USA Basketball

June 15th, 2009

Written by Michael Harris

suttonMontverde Academy boys basketball coach Kevin Sutton picked up some extra duties this summer as he was selected as an assistant coach to Don Showalter for the 2009-10 USA Basketball Men’s Developmental National Team.

“I was awed and humbled to be asked to coach for USA Basketball,” said Kevin in a press release. “I’m excited for several reasons: for one, to be able to serve my country in a capacity that I am most comfortable in as a basketball coach; secondly, to have the opportunity to work with an organization like USA Basketball; and third, I was honored and humbled to be selected to be a part of this new venture with the U16/U17 Junior National Teams.”

The USA Developmental National Team will look to capture the gold medal at the inaugural 2009 FIBA Americas U16 Championship, slated to be held June 17-21 in Mendoza, Argentina, and qualify for the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championship. Read Full Entry

Drake Monument

June 8th, 2009

Story by Michael Harris

Last month, theLAKEmagazine.net asked if anyone knew of the Drake family mystery. It was suggested to one of our colleagues that a monument was dropped at the bottom of Lake Harris.

Well, according to some fact-finding and digging by Lake County resident Karen Walling, the mystery has been uncovered. And really, not so-much a mystery as it is an accident.

Currently, the Drake family has a plot in the Yalaha Cemetery with a 20-foot monument, but originally a 15-foot stone was to be brought to the cemetery. The monument was being brought on barge from Jacksonville, and while crossing Lake Harris, the barge ran into a storm and rough water and fell off the boat.

It is believed to have happened close to the cemetery near Drake Point. Apparently, according to a Daily Commercial story, that pilots flying over the site have seen the monument when sand has shifted and temporarily revealed it.

June 1st, 2009

Written by Blair Townley. Photos provided by Cheri Stoffel and photos by Anthony Rao

Twirling isn’t for sissies, or at least not for girls who don’t want to become confident women comfortable with performing in front of thousands.

That is how Cheri Stoffel, coach and owner of Superstars Twirling Academy in Fruitland Park, views baton twirling and what it brings to young girls.

It’s Raining Hot Husbands

May 31st, 2009

0609_lake_coverThe stormy weather didn’t damper the sizzling spirits of finalists

Written by Blair Townley

May 26, 2009 was definitely a night for the men of Lake County. I’m talking about the Hottest Husbands contest hosted by LAKE Magazine for the five husband finalists at the Mission Inn Resort at Howey-in-the-Hills.

It was definitely a night of hijinks, with dollar bills placed in the belts of the finalists by their wives, while humor was had by contestants as they practiced their male model swagger on the runway.

7 of the original Top 10 finalists were present for the fashion walk, decked out in apparel provided by Trueman’s Fine Men’s Clothing.

Owner Jay Hurley even helped introduce the contestants and mentioned that the audience could even “strip off” the clothes of the contestants if they wanted the clothes. He was joking though.

The mood was buzzing with excitement and nerves for the finalists by those attending to cheer them on. Finalist Daniel Norris’ wife Lauren mentioned her husband had the local, national and international votes on his side from friends and family in Florida, Texas and even Italy.
